UTFS Partners with the UTK Institute of Geotechnology for Drone Services

A Partnership for the Future

As UT Facilities Services looks for better ways to improve campus infrastructure, our utilities team has partnered with the UTK Institute of Geotechnology to change the way we inspect steam lines.

Through the use of thermal imaging via drones, the institute will use these specialized cameras to inspect steam lines and help detect any problem areas. Due to the size of our campus, this process is slated to take a few months. Pedestrians may find rolling sidewalk closures and temporary diversions to certain pathways because these drones cannot not fly over the heads of pedestrians.

Please be on the lookout for signs of closure including but not limited to: cones, signage, flaggers/personnel on site diverting pedestrian traffic. When you encounter these closures, seek out an alternate route and remember that this is part of a bigger plan to make campus better for all who live, work, and play here. We greatly appreciate your cooperation during these closures, and we look forward to expanding this partnership in the future.
